Winner of the Costa Book of the Year 2015.
The Lie Tree is a wonderfully evocative and atmospheric novel by Frances Hardinge, award-winning author of Cuckoo Song and Fly By Night.
Faith's father has been found dead under mysterious circumstances, and as she is searching through his belongings for clues she discovers a strange tree. The tree only grows healthy and bears fruit if you whisper a lie to it. The fruit of the tree, when eaten, will deliver a hidden truth to the person who consumes it. The bigger the lie, the more people who believe it, the bigger the truth that is uncovered.
The girl realizes that she is good at lying and that the tree might hold the key to her father's murder, so she begins to spread untruths far and wide across her small island community. But as her tales spiral out of control, she discovers that where lies seduce, truths shatter . . .

She studied English Language and Literature at Oxford, fell in love with the city's crazed archaic beauty, and lived there for many years. Whilst working full time as a technical author for a software company she started writing her first children's novel, Fly by Night, and was with difficulty persuaded by a good friend to submit the manuscript to Macmillan. Fly by Night went on to win the Branford Boase Award, and was also shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Award. Her subsequent books, Verdigris Deep, Gullstruck Island, Twilight Robbery, A Face Like Glass, Cuckoo Song and The Lie Tree are also aimed at children and young adults. Frances is seldom seen without her hat and is addicted to volcanoes.Télécharger livre The Lie Tree (English Edition) de Frances Hardinge [PDF] – télécharger ebook

It has sofisticated and unpredictable characters and good tension. It is a story written from the perspective of a very intelligent and inquisitative child, which tries to understand the world of the grown ups around her. Her father a stern old fashioned naturalist has dark secret, which she discovers. His behaviour brings shame and death and loss of everything over the family. The book was advertised as a book for young adult readers as it has a very strong moral. It is more intresting for women, not only because of its female protagonist but also because of its critsism of the science establishment and the society 1864 who denied women their role in science.
